Recurrent Prostate Cancer Can Use Herbal Product

SAN FRANCISCO—A combination herbal supplement may benefit men with recurrent prostate cancer (PCa), according to a findings presented here at the annual Genitourinary Cancers Symposium.

 

Tanya B. Dorff, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and colleagues tested “Prostate Health Cocktail”—which contains vitamins D and E, saw palmetto, lycopene, green tea, and soy extracts—in 28 men with recurrent PCa. They were treated with three PHC capsules daily for four-week cycles. PSA tests were repeated after the first cycle, then every two cycles with imaging only as clinical indicated. The primary endpoint was PSA decline. PSA progression was defined as a 25% increase and absolute increase of 5 ng/mL or return to baseline. Stable PSA was the best response for 23 men (83%). Nearly a third of men (eight subjects) had a PSA decline. Forty-seven percent stopped treatment because of progression, with a median time to progression of 9.2 months. The researchers observed no significant change in testosterone or dihydrotestosterone during treatment.
