That might be the difference between beating prostate cancer and watching it come back with a vengeance.
In a recent Johns Hopkins study, researchers determined that men who gained 5 or more pounds prior to—and up to one year after–prostate surgery were nearly twice as likely to battle cancer again, compared to with those who maintained their weight.
“Obesity and weight gain are associated with inflammation, which might influence prostate prostate-cancer recurrence,” explains says study author Corinne Joshu, Ph.D.
If you’re wondering whether this also means that losing weight before surgery will reduce your risk of going round two with a tumor, the researchers aren’t sure.
The findings also suggest a protective effect against prostate cancer reoccurrence associated with weight loss, Jeshu says. It’s not definitive, but we say, it couldn’t hurt.
