As the pace of life becomes faster and faster, millions of people follow an unhealthy lifestyle. Constipation is one of the results of unhealthy eating and physical inactivity. Long-term constipation will increase the burden of the body and the damages will be worse and worse if it lasts.
The damages of constipation:
1. Crissum Disease. As the hard drying stool stays in the rectum for a long time, the causative bacteria in the stool will be easily cause anal cryptitis and then lead to perianal abscess and hypertrophied anal papillae.
2. Ventral hernia. When someone has constipation, he need to push out hard during a bowel movement. Then the pressure in abdomen will increase suddenly, the organs in the abdomen such as the small intestine protruding to the body surface through unsubstantial abdominal wall, resulting in ventral hernia.
3. Mental symptoms. The toxic substances in the stool can constantly stimulate the baroreceptor of the rectal mucosa, which will lead to headache, dizziness, insomnia, inappetence, fatigue, etc. These problems are caused by nervous reflex.
4. Accelerate the ageing of the body. Constipation will increase the toxins in the body and cause problems such as metabolic disorders, endocrine disorders and trace elements imbalance, and then lead to skin pigmentation and itching, lusterless complexion, dry hair, chloasma, acne, etc.
5. Sudden death. People with constipation have risk of sudden death, especially patients with cardiovascular disease like hypertension and coronary heart disease.
Tips for constipation:
1. Diet modification. Adding more foods that contain high fiber, such as bran, fruits and vegetables. These are helpful to relieve constipation.
2. Drink more water. Drinking 2 cups of water (about 500 ml) in the morning is helpful to promote a bowel movement. Other fluids such as milk and juice can also be helpful. Patients need to drink 8 to 10 cups of water every day.
3. Drink yogurt. The lactic acid bacteria in the yogurt are beneficial to promote the proliferation of good bacteria and inhibit the breeding of bad bacteria. In the meantime, lactic acid bacteria can improve the immunity so that the bad bacteria like e. coli will be difficult to breed.
4. Take exercise. Abdominal muscle exercise can help to improve abdominal pressure and promote bowel movement, thus improving defecation.
5. Keep regular bowel movements. Having a bowel movement in the morning is the best option. If a patient go to the bathroom for defecation at the same time in every morning, the conditioned reflex of regular defecation will be formed.
6. Add vegetable fat in the meals. Vegetable fat like sesame oil, soybean oil, and olive oil are helpful to lubricate the intestinal tract and thereby promote bowel movement.
