Acute prostatitis is usually caused by a bacterial infection of the prostate gland. Any bacteria that can cause a urinary tract infection can cause acute bacterial prostatitis. Some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can cause acute prostatitis. In a word, risk factors for acute bacterial prostatitis include infection to the prostate, having a bladder infection, cystitis, mycoplasma chlamydia , dehydration, and the use of a urinary catheter.
